COURSE DESCRIPTION
By homiletics, we mean the science and art governing the preparation and delivery of sermons. It is the “science of which preaching is the art, and of which sermon is the product” ( Perry, 1973). The word probably comes from “homily”, a discourse. Others think the term comes from a combination of two words, “homos”, a saying, and “illa”, a company. By ‘science’ we mean classified knowledge while ‘art’ refers to the application and use of that knowledge.
The subject of homiletics involves amongst others, a consideration of the essential qualifications of a preacher, the urgent necessity for preaching, the importance of the proper preparation of the preaching material, including its discovery and arrangement, and the best means of ensuring the effective presentation and reception of the message.
CERTIFICATION
At the end of this course, the student will be entitled to a certification issued from Anchor University, Lagos.
